I started the Upward Bound Program in 1996 during my freshman year of high school. I remained in UB throughout high school to the end of Summer Bridge and in doing so, I learned some very important skills and some very important things about myself. Some of the skills I learned are hard to pinpoint, because they are now a part of me and are skills I use everyday. For example, I now have greater ease in communicating with people. The Upward Bound program pointed me in the right direction to get to college, get good grades, and to always try my best.
Thanks to the leadership workshops that were held during my time in Upward Bound, I have learned when to be a leader and when to be a follower, which really helps in college study groups. Upward Bound helped me find in myself special traits and skills that make me the unique person I am today.
Since I have been in college, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work along side the Upward Bound Staff and students. The Upward Bound Program is truly an asset to me because it is showing me a different perspective outside of a student’s and is perhaps influencing a future career choice. Upward Bound also has helped me achieve my most sought after goal of going to college (and making the Dean’s List!).
