What happens in a tutoring session?
Upon walking in, students can ask the front desk assistant for tutoring in a particular subject. When a student sits down with a tutor, the tutor works with the student to improve his or her understanding of the subject. This happens in many ways.
Many students only have quick questions regarding an assignment. In these situations, a tutor can work with a student to help discover answers.
Other students require more in-depth help with an essay, assignment or concept. In these situations, tutor sessions can last between thirty minutes and an hour so that significant progress can be made.
The Academic Success Center will still provide tutoring online in the following subjects during the time that face to face courses are suspended:
Writing, Math, Chemistry, IT, Accounting, Study Skills, Business and Economics, and ASL
If you have never had a virtual session before, this is a great opportunity to try it. All you need to do is email the ASC to schedule a session (firstname.lastname@example.org). We will need the following information:
- Your name
- M-number or UC username
- Phone number
- Subject and course you want help in
- A time frame when you are available for a tutoring session (sessions last approximately one hour).
Don’t be discouraged if you are uncomfortable with technology. Our staff will walk you through what to do. You can make multiple appointments — using the first one as an introduction to using the technology. Many students are pleasantly surprised at how easy and helpful the session ends up being. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
