Associate of Arts
Why study History?
The study of history is the story of human origins — and therefore, an exploration of who we are. Studying history at UC Clermont provides students an entry point into the wider world of the humanities and social sciences disciplines, while the associate degree offers the educational foundation needed for pursuing a baccalaureate degree as it helps students develop critical, analytical and creative thinking skills.
This program is open to all students with a high school diploma or GED and the desire to succeed in college. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study.
As a first-year student, you will need to take an English and mathematics placement test if you have not obtained the minimum ACT/SAT score required for exemption. These tests do not affect your admission; however, the results are essential for your proper placement in classes. You must complete placement tests before you register for English or mathematics courses. All placement tests are given free of charge.
Students who are curious, comfortable with complex questions, and enjoy writing, reading and discussing are well suited to the history major.
A history major is not limited to one specific vocation. Its aim is to teach students to think critically, analytically and creatively. It educates students in clear, coherent communication skills, both oral and written. It broadens understanding and enhances ethical decision-making. It also prepares students to learn vocational or technical skills easily and quickly. It is the foundation on which executive careers are built.
The study of history is quite useful for pursuing a career in law, medicine, marketing, advertising, insurance, editing and publishing, journalism, sales, teaching or any of the increasingly complex technological industries that demand well-educated professionals.
